KANPUR: As many as 20 ‘batagur’ turtles were shifted to Kanpur Zoo
from Turtle Survival Alliance
(TSA) of Chambal on Tuesday. This is the one of the most threatened species in Uttar Pradesh and also among 25 species on the verge of extinction. Due to damage done to the environment and poaching, ‘batagur’ turtles have disappeared from all major rivers, except Chambal.
Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) and wildlife department is striving hard to protect ‘betagur’ turtles from 2006. The turtles, which are transferred to Kanpur, were nurtured in Chambal.
Kanpur zoo director Deepak Kumar said that after a protected breeding in Kanpur Zoo, the turtles would be release in the protected areas of Ganga.
