Seattle zoo, wildlife officials work to save native turtles
SEATTLE — Dozens of pond turtles at the Woodland Park Zoo are getting ready to be released into the wild next month.
The 75 turtles were weighed, measured, and marked for identification last Monday. They’ll be released into a protected site in Lakewood in mid-Augusst, zoo officials said.
The zoo says it’s the latest success story in protecting the turtles that nearly became extinct. In 1991, there were just 150 known Western pond turtles.
