‘Turtle hunter’ called in to catch creatures that ‘eat anything’

inextricably free online slots for fun uk INZAI, Chiba Prefecture–A « turtle hunter » has been called in to wipe out a species of the creature here that « eats anything » and could snap at humans.

descargar citas gratis The snapping turtle, a designated invasive alien species, inhabits waters around the Inbanuma marsh in large numbers, and a full-on onslaught has been announced by the Chiba prefectural government to wipe it out.

kitty cabana kolikkopelit Imazu has studied turtles for more than 10 years while working for an environmental group and at a pet shop. He is an expert at catching the creatures, devising traps and teaching others how to best deal with the amphibious foe.

It also breeds like a rabbit.

It is estimated that there are 16,000 snapping turtles whose shells measure at least 15 centimeters long around Inbanuma. The problem started when some were apparently released or escaped from their owners.

The species was first discovered in a river near the marsh in 1978.

A road map toward eliminating the alien species was developed in April by the prefectural government.

The prolonged onslaught will be carried out over a three-year period starting from this fiscal year. The goal is to eliminate 2,500 or more turtles annually.

For the plan, the prefectural government budgeted 23 million yen ($207,000) for this fiscal year, more than double that for the previous fiscal year. The funds will be used, for example, to set an additional 600 traps.

While a total of 1,460 male and female snapping turtles were caught the last fiscal year, the prefecture estimates that it needs to remove 1,250 or more female turtles each year to reduce their number.

The snapping turtle is native to North America and elsewhere and was designated an invasive alien species in 2005 under the invasive alien species law, meaning that it was effectively banned from being imported, kept or transported in Japan.
