150-pound tortoise found in Mesa
A giant African sulcata tortoise was found trudging along a Mesa canal Sunday morning.
The 150-pound tortoise, picked up near Broadway Road and 24th Street, couldn’t fit in Mesa Animal Control officers’ truck.
A wildlife refuge group arrived with a bigger vehicle and transported the tortoise to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, according to Mesa officials. The state found the tortoise’s owner and got it home.
Sulcata tortoises, also known as spurred tortoises, can live 80 to 100 years. Some males have topped 200 pounds.
