710 rare tortoises seized in Benapole
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) seized 710 tortoises of rare species worth about Tk 10 lakh from Boalia border area under Benapole Port Police Station of Jessore district yesterday morning.
Lt Col Md Jahangir Hossain, commanding officer of BGB-26 Battalion, said being informed that huge rare species tortoises were being smuggled into the country from India, the border guards raided the area and seized the tortoises kept in 10 sacks belonging to some people.
The smugglers, however, managed to flee the scene while the BGB men were searching the sacks.
The seized tortoises were later handed over to Khulna Divisional Forest Office, said BGB sources.
