Be aggressive in protecting Penang’s sea turtles — Malaysian Nature Society
OCT 14 — The Malaysian Nature Society (MNS), Penang Branch is extremely disappointed that the sea turtle egg thieves have gotten away with it, scot-free.
It is an offence to be in possession of sea turtle eggs under Malaysian Law and yet the thieves, had blatantly dug up the turtle nest and taken the eggs right in front of so many eye witnesses.
People who steal turtle eggs, should be considered as nothing more then common criminals and they must be brought to book.
It is uncomprehensible that, in this day and age, Penangaites need to consume an endangered species eggs for sustenance, are not that poor, that they have to steal protected sea turtle eggs to survive.
From what we understand the Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa and Golden Sands Resort have been making efforts to make the beach fronting their resorts, conductive for the turtles to land and lay their eggs and this has happened twice this year after being barren of turtle landings for so many years.
One might say that it is in the interest of the hoteliers along the Ferringhi beach front, nonetheless they must be complemented for allocating funds and resources for this to happen.
The turtles coming back the Batu Ferringhi beach, is a very welcome indication that the beach has become suitable again for turtle land and nesting after so many year.
The turtle landings and nesting will be another tourist destination and attraction for Penang if managed sustainably, with conviction.
The State Government should mobilise other agencies to assist the Fisheries Department in protecting the turtle eggs.
The State should also explore whether the Ferringhi beach can be gazetted as a seasonal protected area during the season when the sea turtles come to lay their eggs, or some other means to secure the eggs.
