#GivingTuesday A time for turtles
Marine turtles are in line to get a Christmas present this year.
After Black Friday and Cyber Saturday comes Giving Tuesday.
The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is taking #GivingTuesday a step further, turning it into #TurtleTuesday to help raise the profile of marine turtles as well as raising funds.
Nicola Greaves, the charity’s head of marketing, said they hoped #TurtleTuesday would raise awareness of the plight of threatened turtles across the world and raise vital funds for turtle conservation and research:
« We’ve set a target of £5,000 which will allow us to buy and attach a satellite tag to another turtle on the Turks & Caicos Islands. We’ve already helped tag 19 turtles in the British Overseas Territory, including. 13 sub-adult greens, two adult greens and four adult hawksbills.
« The data collected, especially from the younger turtles, provides insights into behaviours not previously recorded, including developmental migrations, which helps us understand how the turtles are linked to nesting and feeding sites throughout the Caribbean. »
The MCS campaign is being supported by Welsh TV presenter, naturalist and BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch regular, Iolo Williams.
