Traveler with 8 tortoises stops in Macon
If you were traveling up Gray Highway in Macon late Wednesday afternoon, you probably saw a large reptile on the side of the road.
Gerry is an African Land Tortoise. He weighs 200 pounds and is 35 years old. His owner, who declined to be identified, travels around, stopping to display his tortoises.
People stopped by to take pictures with Gerry and to ride him. He is one of 8 tortoises. The owner tells us some are pets and some are rescues.
Macon resident Deborah Green said, « It’s pretty neat. The kids love it. My youngest one was scared of it, but it’s probably rare that we see a big turtle like that, so it was pretty cool. »
Gerry’s owner is retired and accepts donations to help provide to his pets.
