Virginia man gets jail time for collecting, selling turtles
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) – A Newport News man who snatched hundreds of young turtles and eggs from their nests has been sentenced to 30 days in jail.
The Daily Press reports that Corey Lee Taylor was convicted Wednesday on charges related to the sale of the turtles.
State game officials say it is illegal to sell or purchase any turtle species native or introduced to Virginia.
In a statement, the animal protection group PETA said the court closed down the « cruel business » of trading in fragile baby turtles. PETA also discouraged the purchase of turtles and other exotic animals.
Besides 30 days in jail, Taylor was sentenced to one year of probation.
