Volunteers to help prepare beaches for nesting turtles
NORTH HERO, Vt. (AP) – Volunteers are helping to improve nesting beaches for Vermont’s threatened spiny softshell turtle and other turtle species.
The turtle nesting beach work day is taking place Saturday at North Hero State Park and other beaches.
Spiny softshell turtles only nest on a few beaches on the northern portions of Lake Champlain. Skunks, raccoons and other small predators can raid the nests and eat the eggs.
Last year 100 people participated in the cleanup, including many families with children.
The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says once work has been completed at North Hero on Saturday it will move to other locations later in the day.
